{"id":661,"date":"2013-07-11T12:48:09","date_gmt":"2013-07-11T16:48:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.wpmrm.org\/?page_id=661"},"modified":"2022-12-26T21:12:50","modified_gmt":"2022-12-26T21:12:50","slug":"model-railroading-classes","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/wpmrm.org\/?page_id=661","title":{"rendered":"Model Railroading Classes"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The WPMRM will offer five model railroading classes early in 2023<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>#101<\/strong>\u00a0Introduction to Model Railroading (10 classes, twice per for 5 weeks)<br \/>\n<em>Thursday,\u00a0 January 23th, 2023 7:00 p.m. \u2014 9:30 p.m.<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Class 1 \u2013 January 23rd, 2023<\/strong><br \/>\nIntroduction to both full sized railroading as well as model railroading motive power, cars, and how they operate.\u00a0\u00a0 Understanding what you want to model and how this will be modeled.\u00a0 Understanding who is needed and how to operate the layout. \u00a0Moving from an idea to a plan and where the layout will go. How to design a scale or tin-plate, and the condensation of both in terms of a layout.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Class 2\u00a0\u2013 January 30th,\u00a02023<\/strong><br \/>\nWiring &#8211; both 110 and low voltage.  DC, DCC and all of that electrical stuff, and how wiring fits in.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Class 3\u00a0\u2013 February 2nd,\u00a02023<\/strong><br \/>\nGetting things ready in terms of the types of layouts and where they will go. Types of equipment needed and the way the layout will be built.\u00a0\u00a0 Room preparation and bench work such as supports for track and scenery.\u00a0\u00a0 Demos &#8211; of bench work.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Class 4 \u2013 February 6th, 2023<\/strong><br \/>\nUnderstanding types of track, switches and all of the rail stuff. \u00a0Continuation of bench work, supports, \u201craw\u201d scenery and roadbed demos. \u00a0Finally, laying that first piece of track<\/li>\n<li><strong>Class 5 \u2013 February 9th, 2023<\/strong><br \/>\nFinishing up bench work putting the track in place.   Demos of ballasting.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Class 6 \u2013 February 13th, 2023<\/strong><br \/>\nLet\u2019s make trees, rocks, roads, water and grass.\u00a0\u00a0 Working with scenery materials.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Class 7 \u2013 February 16th, 2023<\/strong><br \/>\nMaking the scene come alive with buildings and anything man made\u00a0\u2013 cars, streets, lights, people and lots of detail.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Class 8 \u2013 February 20th, 2023<\/strong><br \/>\nParts and pieces.   Understanding how research for your model railroad.  Understanding terms like scale, super elevated curves, time tables and fast clocks.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Class 9 \u2013 February 23rd, 2023<\/strong><br \/>\nA closer look at the terms such as ready-to- run, scale, kit and kit-bashed in regards to engines and cars. An in depth look at various models, both motive power and rolling stock. Demos on these issues.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Class 10 \u2013 February 27th, 2023<\/strong><br \/>\nKeep them on the tracks.\u00a0 Maintenance and operation of both the layout and equipment.\u00a0 Where does one go from here? Answering any remaining questions&#8230;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Please note the classes are structured to allow time for questions and demonstrations.\u00a0\u00a0 You will be building a small module to take home. \u00a0 \u00a0Because of the nature of this class, classes may run short or long depending on the topic or demonstration. \u00a0Members of the Western Pennsylvania Model Railroad Museum and or guest lecturers will teach this class. \u00a0Actual classes may vary according to individual\u2019s schedules.<br \/>\n<strong>Cost: $60<\/strong><br \/>\n<a title=\"Application\" href=\"http:\/\/www.wpmrm.org\/Class101.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Application<\/a><\/li>\n<p>Members of the Western Pennsylvania Model Railroad Museum will teach this class. There will be a minimum 8 student\u2019s to hold this class and the<br \/>\ncutoff date to sign up is Friday January 20th, 2023. As this is an adult Model Railroading class and one must be 18 or older to take this class and I<br \/>\nunderstand that this is a \u201cno refund\u201d class. Exceptions are in writing only and must be approved. Please note we\u2019ve structured this class to allow time<br \/>\nfor questions and demonstrations. You may be building a small display module to take home. And because of the nature of this class it may run<br \/>\nover, some nights, also actual classes may vary according to individual\u2019s schedules.<\/p>\n<li><strong>#203<\/strong> A Guide to DCC for Model Railroading<br \/>\n<em>Saturday,\u00a0 Feb 18th, 2023 9:30 a.m. \u2014 3:00 p.m.<\/em><br \/>\nThis intense class on Digital Command Control (DCC) will give the model railroader all that they will need to install and program a controller, as well as how to wire the layout for best performance. Tips and techniques will be highlighted. A behind the scenes of how DCC works will be demonstrated. Also, a brief history of DDC will be included.<br \/>\n<strong>Cost: $30<\/strong><br \/>\n<a title=\"Application\" href=\"http:\/\/www.wpmrm.org\/Class203.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Application<\/a><\/li>\n<li><strong>#253\u00a0<\/strong>A Guide to Painting and Weathering for Model Railroading<br \/>\n<em>Saturday,\u00a0 February 25th, 2023 9:30 a.m. \u2014 3:00 p.m.<\/em><br \/>\nThis class will delve in to all aspects of painting and weathering.   From simple brush painting, the old fashion spray cans to air brushing.   Painting of both structures and rolling stock will be covered.   The technique of making something look old and used will be covered in the weathering portion.   This weathering will cover many topics such as over spraying and pastel powers to give that old and use look.<br \/>\n<strong>Cost: $30<\/strong><br \/>\n<a title=\"Application\" href=\"http:\/\/www.wpmrm.org\/Class253.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Application<\/a><\/li>\n<li><strong>#422 <\/strong>An Advanced Guide to Scenery for Model Railroading<br \/>\n<em> Two day class held on<br \/>\nSaturday, \u00a0February  4st, 2023 9:30 a.m. \u2014 3:00 p.m. and<br \/>\nSaturday, \u00a0February 11th, 2023 9:30 a.m. \u2014 3:00 p.m.<br \/>\n<\/em><br \/>\nThis class will get you from bare bench work to trees, grass and water in one day. About 20% of the class will be on preparation of everything below the top 1\u201d of soil. \u00a0That is, plaster and foam etc. for making the mountains, stream beds and all supports the ground. The preparation of the group to accept everything above ground including ballasting of track will be covered.<br \/>\nThe second Saturday will build on what we&#8217;ve done, making dirt, water, rocks and roads etc. The main emphases will be on using various methods of making trees, grass and weeds. Demonstrations of electrostatic methods to apply of this green stuff will be highlighted. This will be a hands-on\u201d (making trees and a small diorama) class.<br \/>\n<strong>Cost: $40<\/strong><br \/>\n<a title=\"Application\" href=\"http:\/\/www.wpmrm.org\/Class422.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Application<\/a><\/li>\n<li><strong>#150\u00a0<\/strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.scouting.org\/Home\/BoyScouts\/AdvancementandAwards\/MeritBadges\/mb-RAIL.aspx\">Boy Scout Merit Badge for Railroading<\/a><br \/>\n<em>Saturday,\u00a0 March 11th, 2023 9:30 a.m. \u2014 4:00 p.m.<\/em><br \/>\nor<br \/>\n<em>Saturday,\u00a0 March 25th, 2023 9:30 a.m. \u2014 4:00 p.m.<\/em><br \/>\nThis class will take a Scout through all of the requirements to receive his Merit Badge for Railroading in one 6 \u00bd hour Saturday. The day will be divided up so the boys will rotate through smaller groups to give them hands on in all areas. Our 4000 sq. ft. display, videos and hands on will cover areas like:<br \/>\n1. How all trains and a railroad operate both full sized and model<br \/>\n2. The engine and cars work<br \/>\n3. How a railroad is built<br \/>\n4. Operation Life Saver<br \/>\n5. Hands on model building<br \/>\nThere will be ample time for interaction with actual railroad employees as well as Museum members. It should be noted there will be Boy Scout leaders present and teaching the class.
