To schedule a private tour send an email to <a title=\"Private Show Request\" href=\"mailto:groupinfo@wpmrm.org\">groupinfo@wpmrm.org<\/a> to schedule the event.<\/p>\n<p>We currently do not host groups outside the Holiday Show season.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><div class=\"single-faq expand-faq\"><h1 id=\"why-are-you-not-opened-all-the-time\" name=\"why-are-you-not-opened-all-the-time\" class=\"faq-question expand-title\">Why are you not opened all the time?<\/h1><div class=\"faq-answer\" rel=\"why-are-you-not-opened-all-the-time\"><p>The organization is run by volunteers.\u00a0 Since many members are still working full time jobs, it would be difficult to be open on a full time schedule.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><div class=\"single-faq expand-faq\"><h1 id=\"what-do-you-do-when-you-are-closed-for-most-of-the-year\" name=\"what-do-you-do-when-you-are-closed-for-most-of-the-year\" class=\"faq-question expand-title\">What do you do when you are closed for most of the year? <\/h1><div class=\"faq-answer\" rel=\"what-do-you-do-when-you-are-closed-for-most-of-the-year\"><p>We are busy repairing all of our locomotives, taking inventory, doing some major house cleaning, build new structures\u00a0 and many other things to make your visit an enjoyable one for you.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><div class=\"single-faq expand-faq\"><h1 id=\"is-membership-open-the-public\" name=\"is-membership-open-the-public\" class=\"faq-question expand-title\">Is membership open the public?<\/h1><div class=\"faq-answer\" rel=\"is-membership-open-the-public\"><p>Yes! \u00a0We are always looking to find new members who can bring their various skills and their love of trains to the museum. \u00a0More information about joining the museum can be found on our <a title=\"Membership\" href=\"http:\/\/www.wpmrm.org\/?page_id=24\">Membership page<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/p>\n<h2><\/h2>\n<h2><strong>The Display<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><div id=\"faq-block\" class=\"faq-block-wrap\" name=\"faq-block\"><div class=\"faq-list expand-faq-list\" data-speed=\"200\"><div class=\"single-faq expand-faq\"><h1 id=\"what-scale-is-used-for-the-layout\" name=\"what-scale-is-used-for-the-layout\" class=\"faq-question expand-title\">What scale is used for the layout?<\/h1><div class=\"faq-answer\" rel=\"what-scale-is-used-for-the-layout\"><p>The main display is HO scale or 1\/87 of real life.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><div class=\"single-faq expand-faq\"><h1 id=\"is-the-mon-valley-a-real-railroad\" name=\"is-the-mon-valley-a-real-railroad\" class=\"faq-question expand-title\">Is the Mon-Valley a real railroad?<\/h1><div class=\"faq-answer\" rel=\"is-the-mon-valley-a-real-railroad\"><p>No it is fictitious.\u00a0 It is a combination\u00a0 mostly of the Western Maryland and the Pittsburgh and Lake Erie railroads.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><div class=\"single-faq expand-faq\"><h1 id=\"why-is-the-layout-set-to-the-early-1950s\" name=\"why-is-the-layout-set-to-the-early-1950s\" class=\"faq-question expand-title\">Why is the layout set to the early 1950s?<\/h1><div class=\"faq-answer\" rel=\"why-is-the-layout-set-to-the-early-1950s\"><p>We chose the early fifties for a number of reasons. \u00a0First, during the post war economic boom railroads were at their busiest, transporting large numbers passengers and freight. \u00a0Also during this time, railroads were starting to make the transition from steam to diesel allowing us to run both.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/p>\n<h2><\/h2>\n<h2><strong>Scenery<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><div id=\"faq-block\" class=\"faq-block-wrap\" name=\"faq-block\"><div class=\"faq-list expand-faq-list\" data-speed=\"200\"><div class=\"single-faq expand-faq\"><h1 id=\"how-do-you-make-the-water\" name=\"how-do-you-make-the-water\" class=\"faq-question expand-title\">How do you make the water?<\/h1><div class=\"faq-answer\" rel=\"how-do-you-make-the-water\"><p>Surprisingly, water does not look real when used for scale modeling (you need the dept to make it look real). \u00a0Water is simulated using a clear epoxy called Envirotex. Typically, this used for hard wood bar finishes. \u00a0Over the years, we have developed techniques to make rapids, waterfalls and currents.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><div class=\"single-faq expand-faq\"><h1 id=\"how-do-you-make-the-rock-croppings\" name=\"how-do-you-make-the-rock-croppings\" class=\"faq-question expand-title\">How do you make the rock croppings?<\/h1><div class=\"faq-answer\" rel=\"how-do-you-make-the-rock-croppings\"><p>We have a number of methods of crating the out croppings.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Plaster molds\u00a0<\/strong>&#8211; The simplest way is to use a plaster mold. \u00a0Once the plaster hardens, the mold is removed and the plaster is painted.<\/li>\n<li><strong style=\"line-height: 16px;\">Ceiling tiles<\/strong><span style=\"line-height: 16px;\"> &#8211; To get the\u00a0striated\u00a0look, drop ceiling tiles are scored and then snapped and stacked on top of each other<\/span><\/li>\n<li><strong>Real rock<\/strong> &#8211; In some cases, we will use rock (slate) on the display.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/div><\/div><div class=\"single-faq expand-faq\"><h1 id=\"how-many-trees-are-on-the-layout\" name=\"how-many-trees-are-on-the-layout\" class=\"faq-question expand-title\">How many trees are on the layout?<\/h1><div class=\"faq-answer\" rel=\"how-many-trees-are-on-the-layout\"><p>We estimate that there are\u00a0between 250,000 to 300,000 trees. \u00a0Approximately 95% of those are made by hand.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><div class=\"single-faq expand-faq\"><h1 id=\"how-do-you-make-the-trees\" name=\"how-do-you-make-the-trees\" class=\"faq-question expand-title\">How do you make the trees?<\/h1><div class=\"faq-answer\" rel=\"how-do-you-make-the-trees\"><p>We have x different types of Trees:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"line-height: 16px;\">&#8220;Puff-balls&#8221; &#8212; Details<\/span><\/li>\n<li>Seedum &#8212; Details<\/li>\n<li>Root &#8212; Details<\/li>\n<li>Purchased &#8212; Details<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/p>\n<h2><\/h2>\n<h2><strong>Rolling Stock and Track<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><div id=\"faq-block\" class=\"faq-block-wrap\" name=\"faq-block\"><div class=\"faq-list expand-faq-list\" data-speed=\"200\"><div class=\"single-faq expand-faq\"><h1 id=\"how-many-trains-do-you-have\" name=\"how-many-trains-do-you-have\" class=\"faq-question expand-title\">How many trains do you have?<\/h1><div class=\"faq-answer\" rel=\"how-many-trains-do-you-have\"><p>Presently, we own just less than 250 diesel locomotives, and about 90 steam locomotives. Only about\u00a050% of those numbers are in &#8220;running order&#8221; with DCC (Digital Command Control). The other 50% include\u00a0new purchases, &#8220;spares&#8221;, and locos which are &#8220;shopped&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>The freight car fleet numbers around 1900 cars. Of these, probably 1200 are in operating condition&#8230; with the remainder being new purchases, items set aside for repair, or cars which must be built from kits and then custom painted for the Mon-Valley System.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Each item is maintained in an inventory database, which will soon be expanded to include the item&#8217;s maintenance record. The committee has also invested countless hours planning the size and diversity of the fleet&#8230; both for the fictitious Mon-Valley System&#8217;s fleet, and for the proper mix of cars from other railroads across the country.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><div class=\"single-faq expand-faq\"><h1 id=\"how-many-feet-of-track-are-on-the-layout\" name=\"how-many-feet-of-track-are-on-the-layout\" class=\"faq-question expand-title\">How many feet of track are on the layout?<\/h1><div class=\"faq-answer\" rel=\"how-many-feet-of-track-are-on-the-layout\"><p>We have 6,500+ feet of track (we&#8217;re not even sure of the exact amount).\u00a0 This includes the four main lines, sidings, yards and hidden track. \u00a0Most of the track is code 83, but some is code 100.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Click on the question for the answer.
